Crosshatching

Call me crazy, but one of my favorite zen activities is putting crosshatching on dungeon maps. It's a beautiful afternoon, the sun is shining, a cool breeze is wafting through the wide-open doors and windows, and my mind is completely shut down while the pencil does all the work ...

It's good, however, to be sure all the walls, rooms, and corridors are where you really want them before filling in all that dead space with thousands of little lines. Otherwise, you can be in for a lot of erasing, and erasing is definitely not zen.

  1. I haven't tried cross-hatching but I understand what you mean. I use small border lines (a la Caverns of Thracia) like this http://tinyurl.com/brfux3g. They are easier to erase and highlight the corridor and room borders in a way I find pleasing. Drawing them also relaxes me, I don't know why.

  2. I'm all about that "diamond" pattern cross-hatching, too. I agree with the zen-like nature of it. It's on the dungeon maps I made and used for my blog background.

  3. Steve: I like the diamond patten cross-hatches, and haven't used those before. Will definitely have to try them out on my next map :D

Is the map a portion from one of the adventures you're running at NTX? ;->

    1. No, this is an adventure that I'm writing for The Secret Fire RPG. It doesn't have a title yet, but it should be available at Gencon. I hope to say more about it in the next few weeks.
